Microbial life contributes to valuable ecosystem services that directly benefit humans. However, there is a general lack of knowlege about these unicellular organisms and, as such, it is difficult to assess their needs. Furthermore, it seems that microbial life is quite self resilient and can thrive without being targeted by conservation efforts.

Microbial life in the phyllosphere Our knowledge of the microbiology of the phyllosphere, or the aerial parts of plants, has historically lagged behind our knowledge of the microbiology of the rhizosphere, or the below-ground habitat of plants, particularly with respect to fundamental questions such as which microorganisms are presen … New Delhi, April 19 (IANS) With alarms sounded about the declining diversity of plants and animals, a related concern with equally profound implications is posed: Is the variety of microbial life, including viruses, changing too -- and if so, in which direction and how fast? The close coupling between geological changes and the conditions for microorganisms yields a synthesis of the fields of microbiology and impact cratering. We use these data to discuss how craters can be used in the search for life beyond Earth. Microbial life forms thrive even in the Mariana Trench, the deepest spot in the Earth's oceans. Microbes also thrive inside rocks up to 1,900 feet (580 m) below the sea floor under 8,500 feet (2,600 m) of ocean.
